The Old and New Fortress
Description
A Journey to the Middle Ages
The Old Fortress dominates the heart of the old city and rewards its visitors with stunning views of the old town and the crystal blue waters of the island. The magnificent Old Fortress was built in 1546 by the Venetians.
It is accessible from Esplanade via a bridge, the famous Contra Fossa, measuring 15 meters of depth and 40 meters of width.
The New Fortress was also built by the Venetians in 1577 to protect the city from the Turks. You can wander around and explore the empty stone halls and passages or reach to the top to capture stunning pictures of the old city and its numerous distinctive buildings and houses.
