Description

Achilleion is one of Europe's most famous royal palaces and a key architectural landmark of Corfu. It is located in the village of Gastouri, approximately 10 km from Corfu town. Designed in the Pompeian style by Italian architects Raffaele Caritto and Antonio Landi, the palace was initially overseen by Austria's consul in Corfu, Alexandre Warsberg. Following his death, Baron Von Bucowitz took over supervision. Built in 1890 at the request of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the palace served as a retreat for the Empress due to her delicate health.

Dedicated to Achilles, from whom it takes its name, the palace grounds are adorned with numerous statues inspired by ancient Greek mythology. Notable artworks include the Nine Muses, pieces by the Italian sculptor Domenico Morani, and sculptures acquired by the Empress from Villa Borghese. Among the most famous sculptures is The Dying Achilles by German artist Ernst Herter.
